Business travel tips

By July 20, 2022July 27th, 2022Blog, Business, Career, Life Balance

As more places continue to open and live events become more common, there will be more business travel as the year goes by.  After being on the road and flying for a while, I can share some tips to help make your business travel less of a hassle.

Book the first flight of the day

Usually the first flight of the day is on time.   In case you miss a connection or experience another mishap, you will have more options than getting a later flight.

Download the airline app on your smartphone

While some still prefer to have their travel information on paper, it’s good to having it digitally.  Check in remotely beforehand and skip the bag check in lines and walk with your carry-on to the security area.

The airline app gives you useful information updates such as gate changes, flight delays, and where to claim your baggage. Save time and decrease your chances of missing a flight. One time I was at the wrong gate for several minutes and found out that the gate changed after receiving an alert with the updated information.

Consider getting a seat upgrade

More often than not, flights are oversold to third parties and flights are fully occupied. Get a seat upgrade to enter the plane with the first groups.  This allows you to take hold of the overhead compartment while you avoid having checking your bag at the gate.  Another benefit is that those seats usually have more leg space and a charger you can use while you fly.

Of note, if an organization is paying for your flight, don’t charge them for a premium seat unless you’re granted authorization.

Bring a change of clothes in your carryon luggage

This year has been exceptionally frustrating for those passengers who experienced canceled flights. For others, their luggage was sent to a different destination.  Having to buy clothes at the last minute while waiting for luggage is not ideal.  You won’t go wrong by bringing a change of clothes in your carryon.

Create a travel itinerary

This final tip today is about safety. Take all the important information about your business travel and share it with someone who is not traveling with you. In case you lose any information this person can send what you need.  I’ve experienced being at a destination and not finding the confirmation number as the front desk attendant patiently waits. As necessary, your designated person can notify your point of contact of any last minute changes in your trip.

I hope this has been helpful and would love to hear other tips that experienced travelers will share.
